The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a attempt to prevent the expansion of slavery into the new territory which was the Louisiana Purchase (of the people). As a result, slavery was not allowed above the 36/30 line, which was congress drew an imaginary line at latitude 36,30 (of the people). This meant that everything south was a slave states. Missouri wanted to become a slave state, to compromise the relation of free and slave states Maine became a free state. At this point the national government had jurisdiction over the expansion of slavery. The North and South had now become divided. This compromise was only a temporary solution to the disagreements about slavery among the states. At this time the slave states and free states were even in number at 11 11 (of the people).
